Fall and Starlings

It started with a cold night
That shivered the trees under their skin.
Their finger tips lit up in red
And yellow
And orange
In the daylight, the starlings drifted and spun together
Like a cloud of smoke.
Like a comb pulled over the land
They tickled the trees and preened the fields.
Then the forest shook its mane wildly.
Sending the starlings off
And spreading a fire of forest leaves.
The flames took flight
In the wake of the flocks.
Leaving the forest bare.
Now, with their color gone, the trees settle in for winter
Their roots digging deep for sleep.
